Red Sandalwood Mala — 108 Beads (Lal Chandan)
A japa mala of 108 red sandalwood beads plus a guru bead, hand-strung from genuine lal chandan. Deep natural maroon, turned from real raktachandan heartwood — the colour is the wood's own, never dyed or coated.
What to expect
Red sandalwood has almost no fragrance. If you want a mala whose scent rises as you practise, choose the white chandan mala instead. What lal chandan offers is a denser, cooler bead and a colour that deepens with years of handling — many practitioners prefer it for exactly that reason, and it is traditionally associated with devotion and steadiness.
What you are buying
- 108 beads plus a guru bead, in the traditional configuration
- Turned from genuine red sandalwood heartwood — no dye, no coating
- Hand-strung and knotted
- Every batch lab-tested
Choosing a bead size
- 6 mm — lightest and most discreet. Comfortable worn as a necklace
- 8 mm — the standard choice for daily japa
- 10 mm — fuller in the hand, easier to count without looking
- 12 mm — largest and heaviest. Best for seated practice rather than wearing
How a mala is used
Hold the mala in your right hand, draped over the middle finger. Move one bead per repetition with the thumb. When you reach the guru bead you have completed 108 — do not cross it. Turn the mala and continue in the opposite direction if you want another round.
Care
Keep away from water and perfume. Red sandalwood is a hard, dense wood and stands up well to daily use — with time the beads darken and develop a smooth, deep lustre. That patina is a sign of a mala that has been used, not a defect.
Frequently asked questions
Why doesn't it smell like sandalwood?
Because red sandalwood is a different tree from white chandan and carries almost no aromatic oil. This is normal and not a sign of a fake.
How do I know the colour isn't dye?
Rub a bead firmly with a damp white cloth. Dyed wood transfers colour; genuine raktachandan does not.
Can I wear it every day?
Yes. It is a hard-wearing wood. The beads will darken over time, which most people consider an improvement.
Which size for a beginner?
8 mm. It suits most hands and works both for seated practice and for wearing.
